Need Help locating files on the Drive

I had an iBook G4 that recently died. No matter what I did I could not get it to turn back on. I had the Drive removed and put into a sleeve to use as an external drive and also more importantly recover photos that are priceless to me. when i plug the device in I can see folders containing apps, libraries, and other various files but i can not find any of my personal files. I fear the photo's are lost forever but praying for a miracle. has any one else experienced this and were you able to recover your files? please help.

Lets say you external hd is Backup.

On your external disk, the user folders are in:

/Volumes/Backup/Users/your-short-user-name/

Where they in iPhoto?

my short user name is mac. The picture are orgainized by date.

/Volumes/Backup/Users/mac/Pictures/iPhoto\ Library/2008/12/15/nasa-shuttle.jpg

I have found that spotlight is inconsistent when searching by filename. To search by filename, try:

FindAnyFile

"This is a free program for Mac OS 10.4 and later that lets you search for files on your disks, primarily on HFS formatted ones." FindAnyFile allows you to search for all files on your harddrive. Do the search from an administrator account. Hold down the option key then click on return.

EasyFind

An alternative to or supplement of Spotlight and finds files, folders or contents in any file without the need for indexing.
